DIY Back-To-School Classroom Folders

It's Back-to-School time again, and if you're looking for a way to brighten up the classroom in a BIG way with a SMALL budget, these DIY Classroom Folders are just the ticket!  

Save $$ money $$ with just a few supplies, since all you need is this fun pack of EXTREME 3D PUFFY™ PAINT and those dirt-cheap folders in bright primary colors that you can pick up anywhere....even the dollar store.

Get creative!  Everybody loves Puffy Paint, and this kit will be so much fun to paint the folders with, the kids will even want to help. 

 "Read Every Day" 

For this folder I used a red colored folder and wrote the word "RED" on one side and then used the acronym to write the words Read Every Day.  Then I cut out green construction paper for the corners and glued them with Aleene's® Tacky Glue.  Next, just add a few fun embellishments and you're done.  It dries super fast, too.

"MINE"

I really had fun with this one!  I cut a funny monster shape from pink construction paper and glued it in the top left corner of the purple folder.  Then painted some crazy teeth, and an eyeball.  The monster outline is in blue, and then I drew the word "MINE" in blue with a black arrow drawn from the monster to the word.  Mine, mine, mine, mine.....  :)

"Writing"

My short stumpy pencil was cut from yellow and pink construction paper and glued to the left side of the purple folder.  I outlined it with red and black paint, and added blue squiggles of writing from the pencil point at the top and right edge of the folder.  To finish it, paint the word "Writing" in white.  

"Bee Smart"

I especially like this one.  The little bumble bee is cut from black construction paper with a circle cut-out for the bee face.  After gluing it onto the folder, I drew the face and antennae with a black crayon.  Then I painted the white stripes across the bee body.  Now write the word "Smart" with red paint.  To finish, paint the wings, ends of the antennae and a bumble bee trail with black.  Bzzzzzz...

"Stuff To Always Remember"

Here's another acronym with the word STAR to use for the words "Stuff To Always Remember".  I started by cutting a star shape from yellow construction paper and gluing it to the green folder with Aleene's® Tacky Glue.  Then I painted the word "STAR" in red along the left side of the folder.  Next I finished the words in blue, outlined the star in white and painted black beams from the star.  How fun is that?

DIY Sunglass Case

When Scott and I were in Amsterdam this year, we were so excited to go to the Van Gogh Museum.  It was a tremendous experience, with the beautiful works of Vincent Van Gogh including masterpieces such as Almond Blossom, The Bedroom and of course, Sunflowers! 

After the tour, we ended up in the museum store where I found this little fabric rectangle in a plastic pouch for cleaning your glasses.  The pattern on the fabric is a print of Sunflowers, and I thought it would be fun to have, since I probably clean my glasses about a dozen times a day.... I know.  

Neat freak.

 Then I got the idea that the fabric would be perfect to make a little pouch for my sunglasses.  Plus, it would be handy to have a pouch made from the same fabric I can use to clean my glasses.

All I needed was a good adhesive to glue two sides together, right?  So I reached for my stash of super-duper fast and easy to use Aleene's® Instant Tacky 1/4" Double-Sided Tape.

Now if you don't have one of these glass cleaner cloths, you can pick them up in tons of stores, usually by the cash register.  Or, you can cut a piece of fabric or felt into a 6 x 7 inch rectangle with pinking shears.  Step #1 is to apply the tape on one of the short ends of the fabric (6-inches).  Then cut a piece of tape 3-1/2 inches long and apply from the corner, half-way up the longer side. It kinda makes an "L" shape.

Step #2 is to peel off the red liner from the tape.  

So far, so good :)

Step #3 is to fold the fabric in half and press the edges of the pouch together firmly with your fingers to insure the adhesive is set.
That's all there is to it, and I love my simple little glasses pouch.  It fits in my skinny cross-body bag, I use it all the time, and I think it's a great idea for a stocking stuffer or teeny gift for someone.

DIY - Wine Bottle Wind Chimes

If you follow me on Facebook or Instagram, you know that every Friday night Scott and I have a TGIF celebration with a glass of wine.  Naturally I have always wanted to do something fun with recycled wine bottles.  So, I combined my love for wine with my love for Aleene's glues, and created these wind chimes.  The brand new Aleene's Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive™ is great for use on metal, glass and other surfaces, so I knew it would be the perfect choice for my  Recycled Wine Bottle Wind Chimes project.

After watching, I was inspired to make this super cute birdhouse your little birdies will call
"Home Sweet Home"
as soon as you hang it on a fence in your backyard!

Here's what you'll need:

Aleene's Ultimate Multi-Surface Adhesive™

Wood Faux Fence

Birdhouse

Wood Bird Cut-out

Wood "Home" Cut-out

2 Wood Clothespins

Pencil

Step 1:

Place items where you want them on the wood faux fence, 

and trace around them with a pencil.

Step 2:

Apply glue inside traced lines, and on each item.
Let glue set up for 2 minutes and then press together.

Step 3:

Mark where you want to put clothespins to hold treats for your birds.  Apply glue to both the clothespins and the faux fence.
Let glue set up for 2 minutes and then press together.

Here's a tip:
Place books or other heavy items on pieces if possible, while the set.  I use plastic bags filled with feed corn that I use to hold things down.  For maximum-strength bond, allow 24 hours for cure time.  This glue is exceptional on wood, stone, metal, ceramic, craft foam, glass and more!

DIY Junk Drawer Collage

This DIY Junk Drawer Collage is super easy for you to do in an afternoon, and it's a great opportunity to go thru those drawers with the weird things you think you'll need 'someday'.  One of my most favorite things to do is mixed media and collage. And this new Aleene's Rapid Dry adhesive really got my attention because it's perfect for my favorite kind of project.  It dries fast, it's a gel consistency, and it holds like a super strong magnet.  

Wanna see how I did it?  

Here's what you'll need:

First, grab a drawer that's running over with junk.  You know the drawer.  It's the one that you have to get a kitchen knife to open it, and you get your finger stuck in it when you try to close it!  Then you'll need something to glue everything to.  I chose this ampersand symbol I found at Michael's that's a heavy chipboard.  And you're going to need a fabulous glue.  The Aleene's Rapid Dry Mixed Media Adhesive is perfect.

Spray paint your letter or symbol with black spray paint, or whatever color you want for your background.  Be sure it's a matte finish because if it's glossy, the adhesive has to work a lot harder to stick.

Next, lay out all your junky bits on the painted chipboard.  I used tons of buttons to fill all the gaps.  Now's the fun part....pick up on piece at a time and apply glue to the back, then press it back onto the board to adhere.  It's okay to work slowly, because the adhesive works best when it's allowed to set a minute or two before you press the two pieces together.  That's all there is to it!

Of course, I just had to add a tassel.  I used the PattieWack™ Tassel Maker to make a 5-inch tassel with four colors of yarn.

Then I made a 3-inch pom-pom and tied it to the top of the tassel.

The pom-pom has 3 colors of yarn, so it really adds to the eclectic look of the finished collage.

I hope you like it!  Now you have a reason for keeping those weird and wonderful bits of junk, and can turn it into a fun and funky junk drawer collage.  If you have ANY questions or comments feel free to leave them in the comment section below!

Fake Cake

Spring always makes me think of pretty little cakes and parties. And to make it last forever, I made a three-tiered fake cake! All you need are three sizes of styro circles, stack them up, and cover them with dried flowers like I did, or you can use silk flowers if you prefer. The tiny little dried rosebuds are so sweet. And I didn't heat up my kitchen, only my trusty glue gun!

Gotta Haves

There are some things I can’t live without on my design table. Paper dolls, masks, crazy ephemera, rub-on alphabets, glue, a ton of scissors, paper, my markers, and a cool roller stamp. Notice the Martha Stewart ticket that I got when she was the keynote speaker at the last CHA trade show. Gotta haves….

PattieWack-N-Crafts

This morning was terrific with LeAnne Taylor. She is so much fun, and we laughed our way through the decoupage mannequin and clip boards. The mannequin is a sneaky peak at a project I did for a book for Sterling Publishing, named "Glue It! & Use It!" with over 100 projects. That book is due out in the Fall'07 and I can hardly wait. The 1st draft came today, and now I am proofing it. I'm SO excited! I'll let you know when it is published, as it will be available at Barnes & Noble.











The gang at the Six in the Morning show here in Tulsa, are great peeps to work with, and we have a lot of fun, but when they count us down, it gets to be serious business. LeAnne keeps it light and humorous, and she gets a kick out of all the projects I bring, like mannequins!











I enjoy doing live TV, as this is something I've been doing for at least a dozen years. The CBS Channel Six Tulsa staff is a tremendous team, and we have a HUGE audience here in the tri-state area. I simply love it, and will keep doing it as long as they keep inviting me to be on.

Bible School Memories

People ask me all the time, "When did you become a crafter?" and I tell them that I can't remember, because I've been crafting all my life. I ran across this pic while searching for something else, and just about fell in the floor laughing! It's from WAY back when my daddy was a pentecostal preacher in Dewey, Oklahoma. This is a bible school picture of all of us holding up our bean pictures. We thought they were absolute masterpieces. Yep, that's me with the scary hair in the highlight circle. Don't laugh, or I'll find a picture of YOU and put in on my blog! *giggle*
