DIY Bird Feeder Yard Art

Yard Art

I've been working in the yard a lot lately, and thought you might like to see my little bird feeder with a bird bath.  The bonus as you can see, is that the little birdies that take a bath here are hanging out with this cute gnome!  He's always ready say Hi! to all comers.

The best part about this bird feeder/bird bath is how easy it was to make.  All you need is a cup and saucer, a handful of buttons, a copper 3/4" pipe, and a 3/4" copper cap.  And GLUE!

If you're unfamiliar with the pipe and cap, just ask the dude at the home improvement store, and they'll fix you right up.  I purchased an 8 foot pipe and asked him to cut it in half so I could make 2 while I was at it.  And I grabbed two copper caps.

Here's what you do:
Mix a little 2-part Epoxy on a paper plate with a craft stick.  You won't need tons, and you can always swirl a little more together if you run out.  Then glue the cup to the saucer, and the buttons around the edge.  Tape the buttons on with masking tape until the glue sets up so they don't slide off.  Now turn everything upside down and glue the copper cap to the bottom of the saucer; flat side to the saucer.  The cap will be what holds the pipe to the saucer.  you don't want to glue the pipe to the cap.

After everything dries (it won't take long), poke the pole in the ground and then place the finished bird feeder/bird bath onto the top of the pole, fitting the cap over the end of the pole.  It really IS that easy.  Now you can sit a little friend like my gnome, or a frog, or any other kitschy critter on the side of the cup to keep the birdies company.

Lastly, you can wind a string of beads on a wire around the top of the pole for added decoration like I did.  Voila!  How cute is that? And don't forget to pour birdseed into the saucer, and fill the cup with water.  Now you're ready to sit back and watch the birds enjoy!

Happy Summer!

Are you ready?

St. Patrick's day is a week away, and I haven't even thought about what I want to do. My gal pal Melody Good put a gorgeous shamrock plant on her desk this week and I just love turning the corner and seeing it there. It makes me smile every time.

I thought about sending out some fun treats and found these delectably delicious looking fortune cookies on Amazon.com that are dipped in chocolate and then into teenie weenie shamrock sprinkles. Talk about yum!

Now, wouldn't it be cute to mimic these with beige circles of felt that you shape and glue into faux fortune cookies, then spread dimensional paint onto them like icing, then drop seed beads onto them? Okay, now I've got to make a run to the craft store....see ya!

Beaded Bobeches

If you caught me on the Six in the Morning show on CBS in Tulsa this morning, I hope you liked the beaded bobeches. Christmas candles are always a pretty way to decorate, and if you make these jeweled bobeches you’ll have no more ruined tablecloths, or wax covered candlesticks. Plus, a set of candlesticks complete with beaded bobeches would be a beautiful gift.

You can use recycled plastic from packaging as long as it is really heavy. Or you can use Pattiewack™ Crafting Plastic that you can find in my shopping pages. I really put lots of beads on these, but you could space them further apart around the rim and not use as many.

Here's how to make them for gifts or your home:

Beaded Candlestick Bobeches

Supplies:
Taper Candle and Candlestick
Pattiewack™ Crafting Plastic
(or recycled plastic packaging)
Large Assortment of Glass Beads
1/4” Jump Rings
3” Eye Pins
Needle Nose Pliers
1/4” Hole Punch
Scissors
Cardstock
Pencil
Permanent Marker

Steps:
1. Trace a 4” circle onto cardstock and trace a 1” circle in the center. Cut out. Punch 1/4” holes around the edge of the cardstock, to create a pattern.
2. Trace the pattern onto crafting plastic with a marker.
3. Cut out and punch the plastic according to the pattern.
4. Thread beads onto the eye pin, leaving 1/2” unbeaded.
5. Coil the unbeaded end with pliers.
6. Attach the beaded eye pin to the edge of the plastic with a jump ring.
7. Repeat steps until the entire bobeche is beaded.
8. Place on candlestick, and insert taper candle in the center to complete.

Candle Jewelry

Did you know that you can make jewelry for your candles? Well, just click on over to LifetimeTV.com and watch while I turn beads, pins, sticky sheets and eye-pins into jazzy jewelry that pokes right into the sides of your candles. I was so excited when I saw that this craft video was up on the list of 16 projects to watch. It is absolutely one of my favorites, because it's so fast and easy, but it really delivers a lot of punch! The thing is, you can make these in less than an hour for your home, or a fancy gift for someone special. Sooooo, come on over and hang out with me, while I craft my crazy butt off at LifetimeTV.com!
